We are delighted to announce that Nutfield Church C of E Primary School now has a Pets as Therapy (PAT) dog as part of our school community.
This wonderful addition supports our vision inspired by John 10:10, to help pupil’s live life in all its fullness, including their learning journey. The dog (Barley) belongs to Reverend Len, who many of you already know very well.
The Benefits of Reading with a Therapy Dog:
Reading with a therapy dog offers unique advantages that enhance pupils’ literacy skills and emotional well-being:
1. Building Confidence and Reducing Anxiety
Pupils often feel less pressure and anxiety when reading aloud to a non-judgmental, calm animal. This safe environment helps boost their confidence and encourages more frequent and enthusiastic reading practice.
2. Improving Reading Fluency and Comprehension
The relaxed setting allows pupils to focus better, improving fluency and comprehension. The presence of the dog can make reading sessions feel less like a test and more like a friendly conversation.
3. Encouraging Positive Attitudes Towards Reading
Many pupils who struggle with reading or have low motivation find reading with a therapy dog enjoyable and rewarding. This positive experience fosters a lifelong love of reading and learning.
4. Supporting Emotional and Social Development
Interaction with the therapy dog promotes empathy, responsibility, and social skills. Pupils learn to care for and respect the animal, which can translate into positive relationships with peers and adults.
At Nutfield Church C of E Primary School, we are proud to integrate this innovative approach into our literacy programme, supporting every pupil to flourish academically and emotionally.
