Starting Secondary School

Brilliant schools give young people the great start in life they deserve. Secondary schools are still finalising their plans around open days. The brochure “Starting secondary school – Application Guide” does not include any dates for specific schools, so you will have to check for updates on the school websites that you are considering for your child/ren.

Before you choose your school, please take some time to look at school brochures and websites and also to look at the”most recent Ofsted” of the school/s you are considering for your child/ren.

Apply Online:

If your child will reach age 11 between 1 September 2023 and 31 August 2024, they will be due to start secondary school in September 2024.

Important dates:

1 September 2024:
You can apply online for a school place.

25 October 2024:
We suggest you submit your secondary application by this date as this is the Friday before the half term holiday.

31 October 2024:
Closing date for secondary applications but we welcome early applications.

1 March 2025:
Secondary outcomes will be sent by post or email. If you applied online, you will receive an email in the evening with the outcome and you can also view your school offer online. If you registered for ParentComms, you will also receive a notification with the outcome.

By 15 March 2025:
You must confirm whether you wish to accept or decline the place you have been offered.

By 15 April 2025:
For many schools, if you wish to appeal, you should submit it by this date so that it can be heard by 18 June 2024. Other schools may have different appeal deadlines.
