This afternoon, we joined the Farm Managers at Trinity Farm for some planting. Today we were planting a selection of “Swift” potatoes, which have been cultivated using a method called “Chitting”.
Chitting is the process of encouraging seed potatoes to sprout before planting, giving them a head start and potentially leading to an earlier and more bountiful harvest. Chitting involves placing seed potatoes in a cool, light, and airy place (like an egg carton or seed tray) to encourage the development of strong, short shoots (chits) before planting them in the ground.
Our first batch were ready today so our team pulled on their wellies and got to work. They also tended to our wonderful animals and of course took the opportunity for a cuddle. We took some pictures of our fabulous Farm Managers in action today, which can be seen in the gallery below. Please click on the thumbnails for a larger view.
The team will be back on Monday for more planting so please check back for more pictures!
