On Wednesday 13th May four children from Year 5 had the unique opportunity to attend a Performing Arts Day hosted by Christ’s Hospital Independent School in Horsham.
During the course of the day the children participated in four workshops including: puppetry, drama, dance and music. Each workshop was led by a specialist teacher in the school’s purpose-built theatre, rehearsal rooms and music rooms. The children learnt so much through this experience helping to develop and deepen their passion for the performing arts.
The whole day was incredibly special from witnessing the school’s famous band procession, observing the students of Christ’s Hospital around the campus in their iconic uniform which is one of the school’s most public and enduring features, the outer long blue coat and distinctive yellow socks have remained virtually unchanged for over 470 years. The children greatly enjoyed having lunch in the grand dining hall adorned with paintings of royalty and former Headteachers.
The highlight, was of course their participation in each of the workshops which they relished. Each of our pupils proudly represented Nutfield Church Primary and their families behaving impeccably, engaging fully throughout the day and making the very most of this event. In addition, I am sure they will have made some very special memories which they will carry with them for years to come.
Christ’s Hospital (CH) is an extraordinary school. It was founded nearly 500 years ago as one of the famous Royal Hospitals of London, marking the beginning of the social services in Tudor England. CH, established in the monastery of the Grey Friars in Newgate Street, embraced the task of educating and nourishing the destitute children of the City and took children of all social backgrounds and ages. In November 1552, CH opened its doors to 380 girls and boys; within a year, the number had increased to over 500.
As part of their philanthropic approach to education CH run a scholarship program. If any child in the current Year 5 cohort were interested in joining Christ’s Hospital for Year 7 entry in 2027, they would be delighted to receive an application from them.
