On Tuesday 16th November Faith Team led Collective Worship. Faith Team lead Collective Worship once a term. This term Faith Team decided that they would like to base their Collective Worship on parables, as some of the best Bible stories are, of course, the parables of Jesus. Jesus used these special stories to challenge his listeners to think again about life, about themselves and their neighbours, and about the ways of this world and those of the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Faith Team chose to tell the parable of the mustard seed:
Jesus told them another parable: . . . (Matt. 13:31-32)
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches”
The mustard seed was the smallest seed, but it grew into a huge plant. This is Mark’s third parable of growth. In this parable, Jesus teaches that although the Kingdom of God started small, with Jesus and the disciples, it would grow and spread across the world to unlimited numbers of followers.
