On Friday, Year 5 had the pleasure of Face Timing Dr Robinson (one of our parents) who is currently on board the Joides Resolution ship in the middle of the Atlantic conducting research into sediment and rocks 5km deep.
The children were given a tour of the ship, shown the laboratories, the drill and were introduced to several scientists on board the ship.
Before Dr Robinson left, she asked each child to design a cup that she took with her. The cups were then attached to the drill and were taken 5km down in the middle of the ocean. The lack of air and the pressure made the cups compress and they surfaced being a quarter of the size.
The children had a lovely morning and asked many questions about the research, the boat and the trip. Thank you to Dr Robinson and Marlo. We wish all on board Joides Resolution a safe journey home!
